    2003 Klein Palomino XV

In the late 1980's, Paul Turner produced the first Rock Shox suspension forks.  After leaving Rock Shox, he was still playing with new suspension designs and in 1999 started Maverick to build these ideas into bicycles.  The idea was to integrate the suspension into the frame as opposed to just bolting a shock to the frame.   Not having to design the frame to an industry standard replacement shock freed up the design process.  From the Maverick web site:

"By 2000 theyd built two dozen for buddies and colleagues. The design focused on elegant, efficient manipulation of the rear wheel path, what they called MonoLink suspension.  The ML 7 relied on the industry's first integrated rear shock-the shock was built into the bike, not just bolted on.  The MonoLink suspension offers unmatched lateral stiffness. and allows the front and rear wheels to travel ion virtually the same path when active.  This is now known as Parallel Path Technology."

Trek had owned Klein bikes for awhile and were looking for something to set them apart.  One way was to offer a unique rear suspension, enter Maverick.  This was the second to top model in 2003 and features an XT drivetrain with a bunch of Bontrager branded parts.  The Thomson post and Easton bars are later additions to the bike.
