In the early 1990's, the major manufacturers where still trying to figure out what to do with full suspension designs. Trek decided to go the simple route with a cantilevered beam with an elastomer spring. The system offered travel equal to three times the compression of the shock. This system, while simple, was not very effective. The shock pogo'd quite a bit and was difficult to control. Later versions added damping to the shock. Components are Shimano XTR which was new for 1992 and included 8 speeds for the first time along with RapidFire + (push/pull) shifters. The suspension fork was branded by Trek but produced by Showa in Japan.
