    1986 Breezer Series III

One of approximately 60 (update: there were likely closer to 25 Series III bike)  Series III bikes made by Joe Breeze.  This is number 48 of the Series III bikes and is chrome plated as opposed to the nickel plating typical of early Breezers.  It appears as if only two of the Series III bikes were chrome; the other one was partially painted blue.  The chain stay-mounted Suntour Roller Cam brake was another custom option.  The clamp-on stem is attached to a brazed-on stub in the steerer tube.  This stub has a 1968 Swiss 10 centime coin brazed to the top of it and then plated.  The Breezer Series I bikes are generally acknowledged as the first purpose-built mountain bikes.  Joe Breeze produced ten Series I bikes, which have conspicuous twin laterals. The 1980-81 Breezer Series II bikes had a diamond-frame design and Breeze produced 25 of those. In 1982 he scheduled
75 Breezer Series III bikes, which had various refinements, but produced only about 60 (update: closer to 25 Series III bikes), for a total production run of about 95 (update: total production was closer to 60) hand-built Breezer bikes. From 1986 to 1990 Breeze partnered with American Bicycle Manufacturing to produce the aluminum American Breezer bikes. From 1991 to 1998, production moved overseas for the run of Breeze-designed "spear-point" steel and aluminum bikes.  In my opinion, the first Breezers are among the most "collectible" mountain bikes produced.
