    1983 Specialized Stumpjumper

This bike is part of the MOMBAT collection and is NOT FOR SALE.  Please check out our Vintage Bikes for Sale page to see all of our current offerings.

Specialized introduced the Stumpjumper in late 1981 as a 1982 model year bike.  1983, the second production year, brought on a few changes.  Since this was produced in late 1982, it still uses some of the earlier parts such as TA cranks and MAFAC brakes but uses the later lugged frame. These bikes were still being made in batches and spec likely changed from batch to batch based on new parts and parts availability.

This particular bike was owned by Ed Pavelka, long time editor of Bicycling magazine, and was purchased at the West Hill bike shop in Putney, Vermont.  Ed claims this was one of the earliest mountain bikes in VT.  Most of our display bikes are cleaned and detailed first but this one shows a nice well-loved patina so we left it in its "as acquired" state.
