1968 Schwinn Bomber Bike

This is a 26" wheel 1968 Schwinn that was converted for mountain bike use.  The frame and bars have seen a hard life since they show evidence of being welded back together multiple times.   The brakes consist of an Atom rear drum and Sturmey Archer front.  The Brooks saddle is held in place by an interest brace the run from the nose of the saddle to the frame.  Here is the story of the "Ace Nurd":

My brother, Jim (James Taylor) and I both attended Pennsylvania State University back in the late 70s and we were both road racers on our Raleigh Pros. We both worked at Guys Bicycles near our home town and when we got to University we picked up hours at the coolest shop in town, The Bicycle Shop on West College Ave. Aside from gluing on sew-ups and selling Schwinns we had time to dig around in the basement and discover some functional relics of the balloon tire era that we refurbished into campus bikes just for fun. The real breakthrough came when Cyclepro started distributing a fat 26 BMX style fork for beach bikes. The salesman told us these forks were selling well on the west coast, so with these forks, our new Bomber Bikes were strong enough to ride down steps on campus, down the hiking trails on Mt Nittany and Mt Tussey, and anywhere else we could find structures to jump off of. We got hurt a lot and broke lots of parts. The whole phenomenon was happening concurrently in California. We didnt like the repack after every ride idea so we employed the drum brake hubs like the Atom and Raleigh hubs on Ace Nurd . Rims brakes of any sort were useless when your rims were dented to the point of barely turning through the chain stays. Randy Moore, whos bike was named Wimpy, one of us original Bomber Bikers became the owner of The Bicycle Shop and continued with the mountain bike popularity that followed, and all the old bikes were lost, mine named Blizzer was stolen in Ocean City, New Jersey. Ace Nurd is the only surviving original. I just couldnt pitch it in the dumpster, even if you cannibalize it at least I know its spirit lives on like an organ donor.
